What UL 1973 Compliance Means at Voltagen

Holding our products to the highest standard, safety first.

At Voltagen Power Solutions, safety and reliability aren’t just goals, they’re the foundation to everything we build. That is why every battery system we build is tested to meet UL 1973 standards, the premier safety standard for batteries used in stationary and vehicle auxiliary power applications, or APU’s. By setting and maintaining this standard, we ensure that those who trust us to power their lives forward will operate with zero compromise on safety, giving them confidence and trust in their battery system.

Why We Align with UL 1973 Standards

UL 1973 is a set of safety requirements written by UL Standards & Engagement, an independent safety science organization. This standard is widely recognized as the battery APU market’s gold standard because of its rigorous, in-depth evaluation criteria that validate system safety. To ensure full compliance with UL 1973 standards, Voltagen battery power systems are tested for:

  • Thermal Risk: Lithium-ion batteries can overheat in a chain reaction called thermal runaway, where a battery heats itself faster than it can cool down. Testing looks at how a battery system handles extreme heat and internal faults, and whether it is designed to keep a problem from spreading.
  • Electrical stress: This tests how the system responds to overcharging, short circuits, and draining too far. Specifically, the test checks to see that a system’s battery management system, or BMS, which is often seen as the “brain” of a battery reacts in a situation and shuts things down if something looks wrong.
  • Bumps and vibration: Our APU’s are often placed on trucks, vans, and other mobile systems, meaning that an APU is subject to taking a potential beating while on the road. This portion of testing evaluates how a system will respond to repeated vibration, shock, and impact, things that will be experienced on the road.
  • Weather and temperature. Systems are tested across a wide range of temperatures, ensuring safe operation no matter the weather.
